Phoenix, AZ- On Monday, the NAIA announced the 2016 Daktronics-NAIA Football Scholar-Athlete honorees which featured seven Arizona Christian players.  The seven ACU scholar-athletes were more than the six other CSFL football schools combined.

To reach NAIA Scholar-Athlete status an athlete must hold a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have reached junior academic status.

In total, 325 NAIA football players met the scholar-athlete requirements.  Click here for the complete list.

Brennan Bowen is a senior offensive lineman from Phoenix, AZ, that anchored the line for 28 of the 29 games played in ACU history.  The three year ACU letter winner and two time All-CSFL athlete graduated earlier this month with a degree in secondary education.

Quinta Thomas, the senior from Little Rock, AR, appeared in all 19 games played by the Firestorm the last two seasons.  The running back concluded his career with 1,037 rushing yards, 12 touchdowns on the ground, and one receiving touchdown.  He is majoring in secondary education.

Junior Derek Brush, who calls home Whittier, CA, was recently named the first ACU Football NAIA All-American.  The punter/kicker topped the NAIA with a 45.6 punting average.  The third year Firestorm is majoring in business administration.

Serving as the backup quarterback and holder, Junior Ryan Esslinger from La Habra, CA, is closing in on 2,000 career passing yards.  The secondary education major just concluded his third season of playing for ACU football.

Wide receiver Daniel Schembri, a junior from Scottsdale, AZ, has spent the last three years in the ACU program with appearances in seven contests.  Schembri is working on a degree in Christian ministries.

Junior Sammy Serwa spent the last three years as part of the Firestorm team including redshirting this season due to an injury.  The safety out of Peoria, AZ, has appeared in 16 games during his two seasons actually on the field while working on a degree in business administration.

As a junior psychology major, Sam Strate has played some at safety and on special teams over the last three seasons.  Strate is a local from Phoenix, AZ.

All seven NAIA scholar-athletes also earned CSFL All-Academic Team honors.
